Monthly Update, July 2007
PERFECT SURVEY!! On June 18-21 we had four surveyors from the Ohio Department of Health here for our annual survey in nursing and assisted living and they found no deficiencies. They looked at 80 resident charts and spoke to many residents, staff and family members. With over 400 federal standards and over 50 pages of state standards, it is truly remarkable to achieve this honor. They liked our model of care and our wireless charting system. Staff and residents were very helpful and friendly. We have received commendations from our Board of Directors and United Church Homes. We can be very proud of SEM Haven as a place to live and work.
HOUSEHOLD HAPPENINGS
Ripple Ridge: Our annual summer picnic was held on our household because the heat index that day was over 90. We did have a couple of brave souls who sat in the shade on the patio. Many thanks to Kathy Booth's husband Dale and son Dane who graciously tilled the turf for our garden. They couldn't figure out why they could only go down about 4 inches before they struck something that they couldn't get through. We found out later that our garden is located in the old parking lot. The plants don't seem to mind it as they are growing nicely since the rain has come. We are going to
The Schoolhouse restaurant this month; many of the residents remember when it was actually a school. We also plan a trip to the
Dairy Corner, formerly owned by Helen Grate!
Kugler Woods: Our Cornhole Team won our first match with Ripple Ridge by
a very close margin - only one point! Our players: I are looking forward to our next match with McCormick Landing. We are really proud of the team spirit and great sportsmanship shown by all.
Milcroft Manor: Our second shift had a PJ party. The staff and residents had their best PJ's on and watched old movies, ate popcorn and played games. Our outing last month was a summer ride and trip to
Dairy Queen. After that, one of the residents said they wanted to go to
White Castle; sooo off we went to the castle for a burger and coke!
We also had a Cookout on the household for the residents and staff. We had lots of good food and conversation!
CONSTRUCTION - Dalo Construction has moved out! After almost 3 years of construction we are finally finished. We really appreciate Doug Rauscher and Craig Peters from Dalo whom we have been working closely with during construction. They have been wonderful! We moved into Shumard Rehab Center in June. We are really fortunate to have a space dedicated to those who are recovering from illness or injury with the plan to return to home or Assisted Living.
NURSING REMINDER - Our nursing supervisors would like to remind you that over-the-counter medicines and herbal remedies cannot be left in resident rooms or dispensed without a physician's order.
RESIDENTS OF THE MONTH - Dorothy Seip was born in Shamokin, Pennsylvania but lived most of her life in Bellevue, Ohio, about 70 miles west of Cleveland. She is the eldest of six children, with only one brother still living. In 1937 Dorothy married Wilbur, who passed on in 1994 after 57 years of marriage. She has two sons (Scott and Nelson), four grandchildren (Debbie, Staci, Eric and Nick), and her first great-grandson (Noah) who was born this past February. In her family's early years, Dorothy was primarily a homemaker. Once both of her sons were is school she went back to work and had various jobs including a barrel maker and a worker for the Bellevue schools. She is a life-long member of the Eastern Star and last year received her 65th year anniversary pin. Dorothy is also a life-long gardener and has taken an interest in helping care for the gardens in our Courtyard as well as our indoor plants. We appreciate her "green thumb"! Dorothy enjoys all of our activities, especially CORNHOLE! Best of all she has enjoyed the many new friends she has made since moving to SEM Haven.
Ruth Baldridge was born and reared in Peebles, OH in a farm community called "Jack Town". She had two brothers and four sisters and is the only survivor of her generation. Ruth worked as a nurse aide at Bethesda Hospital and also in a factory in Oakley during WW II. In 1934, she married William Steele Baldridge (nicknamed "Steely" or "Baldy"). He worked at Allis-Chalmers in Norwood as a machinist from 1942 until he retired in 1968. They owned rental property, which they used as a motel, renting rooms to GM workers. Ruth ran the establishment and was everything from maid to manager. Ruth has two children (Robert and Sharon), six grandchildren, and 5 greats. Ruth loved to sew and she is a big Reds fan. She is also a very good cook (meat and potatoes) from her farm girl days. She drove a car until age 94! Ruth enjoys bingo and music and is active in our church services and Bible studies.
