Monthly Update, September 2007

OPEN HOUSE – Our open house to celebrate the completion of our construction & renovation project is set for Sunday, September 23 at 2:00. Hope to see you there!

HOUSEHOLD HAPPENINGS - Kugler Woods - In August we had a great time shopping at our local Walmart. Thanks to Marge Hale, Kris Baumann, Shirley Comstock and Vi Jordan, every resident had their very own volunteer to shop with. We have also had a great time making homemade ice cream by tossing an ice cream filled ball back and forth to thicken the ice cream. That was lots of laughs.
McCormick Landing is the cornhole champion! We recently defeated Gatch Grove. We celebrated with a pizza party and gave out trophies and gold medals. Our garden produced cucumbers and tomatoes that we all enjoyed. In August we had a grill out and also dined out at Cheeseburger in Paradise. We really love to eat! We are now planning a Hawaiian Luau (we are making our own grass shirts).
Ripple Ridge - Our lunch outing to the Schoolhouse Restaurant got detoured to the Cracker Barrel due to construction, but we still had a wonderful time. Our mantel is getting a great new look by designers Kelli Bonham and Amy Judd. Our first year of gardening was bountiful. We enjoyed zucchini, tomatoes, and cantaloupe. Kelli made a wonderful lunch of fresh green beans, ham, potatoes, cornbread and strawberry shortcake. Thanks to Nancy Stansell for making our geraniums look good. Thanks to Barbara Heitkemper and Ruth Knoop for donating hummingbird feeders. We have enjoyed watching them from our dining room. We are looking forward to a cookout on September 13th.
Shumard Rehab – Our new homemaker, Peggy Havens, has really taken ownership of her kitchen – she has brought in fresh fruit in baskets for the tables so residents can enjoy it throughout the day. Renee Mack, nurse aide, is starting LPN school soon.
Milcroft Manor has babies………well, baby fish in our aquarium. The residents and staff are enjoying the new additions to the tank. We are practicing for the Olympics that will be held on Sept. 27th and are also planning a family picnic before the end of summer!
Gatch Grove is planning an end of summer cookout on evening shift mid Sept. We will also be having a fundraiser in mid October; all proceeds will benefit a local family in need for the up and coming holidays.

STAFF NEWS – Congratulations to some new moms! Brynttainy Lyon (nurse aide Shumard rehab) has a new baby girl, Jaelynn Krystal, born in early August and weighing 8 lb 2 oz. Joy Zielinski (physical therapist) had a new 7 lb baby boy, Luke Adams, born on August 24. Megan Weber (nurse aide Milcroft Manor) had a son, Brayden Andrew, born August 30 and weighing 7 lb, 8 oz. Brayden is also the grandson of Beth Weber (nurse aide Ripple Ridge). We are very proud of our newest RN, Tina Acree (nurse leader Gatch Grove) who recently finished the LPN to RN program at Raymond Walters College.

We were very sad to say good-bye to Theresa Roy, a long-term (24 year) employee at SEM Haven. She died on August 23 after losing a hard fought battle with cancer. Theresa was very kind and became a friend to many of our residents. We will really miss her. Please keep her family in your thoughts, especially her children, Joshua and Elizabeth.

Another good-bye goes to Millie Harvey who has worked night shift on McCormick Landing for 7 years. Millie is very dependable and truly loves her residents, including buying them Christmas gifts. Millie is moving out of state to care for an ill grandchild. Her family will also need lots of prayers.

Our annual staff recognition banquet is scheduled for Friday, November 9, at Receptions Banquet Hall in Eastgate. We sincerely appreciate the monetary and merchandise donations from friends, family members and vendors that make this night possible. We always have many great door prizes! Please make donations through Toni in the Business Office.

RESIDENT OF THE MONTH for September is Virginia Shelton. She was born on June 29, 1919 and grew up on a farm in Adams County Ohio. She was the oldest of three children. Shortly after graduating from Seaman High School she married Raymond Shelton and they lived in Winchester, Ohio all of their married life (38 years) until his death in 1975. Virginia has a daughter Roslyn, a granddaughter Kristin, and a great granddaughter, Kendall Rose.

Virginia and Raymond ran a wholesale and retail egg business and did paper hanging on the side. They raised tobacco and tomatoes for market. Virginia was an active member of Winchester Methodist Church. She enjoyed sewing, embroidering, making quilts and canning vegetables. Her grape jelly was a favorite of her granddaughter Kristin. Kristin also remembers marching to the cemetery every year on Memorial Day with Grandma Shelton, carrying flowers from Grandma’s yard to adorn the veterans’ gravestones.

In later years, after the death of Raymond, Virginia learned to drive and became much more adventuresome. She attended Mt. Pisgah Methodist Church near Amelia where she taught children’s Sunday school and worked hard cooking for every occasion that involved a crowd at the church. At SEM Haven she looks forward to visits from her family, especially Kendall, and she enjoys all the activities that SEM Haven has to offer

OHIO DEPARTMENT OF AGING (ODA) - On October 3rd the ODA will be here to conduct satisfaction surveys on a sample of interviewable residents. Results will be posted on the Nursing Home Compare website. If you do not want your family member to be interviewed please let Connie Woeber know.

Sincerely,
Barb Wolf,
Administrator
