Monthly Update, October 2008

HOUSEHOLD HAPPENINGS - McCormick Landing -. Our Family won the “Most Spirited” trophy at the Olympics. We made very noisy noisemakers and also had some pretty loud mouths!! For our craft projects (sale to be Oct 24, 10AM-2PM) we need empty paper towel and toilet paper rolls and small baby food jars. You can drop them off to Melody or leave them with the receptionist. We will also be making and selling baked goods if anyone would like to make a donation.
Ripple Ridge - We had a great September! We had a great time at O'Charley's. We practiced very hard for the Olympics and came in first place over all. We all enjoyed playing in the games. Our next happy hour will be October 20th and we are looking forward to a nice evening. We are going to the river for lunch on October 9th and hope for nice weather so we can eat outside.
Milcroft Manor - The staff and residents said “good-bye” to summer with a final cook-out. The weather was great and the food delicious. We had a baby shower for Raquel Camacho, the staff and residents provided very useful and practical gifts. Our hope is that she will return soon. October brings cooler weather and Halloween, we will be busy making costumes for the residents and planning fall activities.
Gatch Grove - We are going to Red Lobster for lunch this month. We are hosting a pumpkin carving event on the 25th from 2-3. We will be starting our Cookie Dough fundraiser Oct 24 through Nov 14, with delivery by Dec 12. An October cookout is in the works - we haven’t decided on the menu, but it will be delicious! Congratulations to our family members who participated in the SEM Olympics!
Kugler Woods - We welcome Deanna Ball, RN to our family as our nurse leader. Deanna is our nursing supervisor and used to work in Assisted Living. She will be helping our staff as we transition to computerized charting and working with Vivian in leading our family in the Eden Principles. We had a great “National Assisted Living Week” - every day was a party with entertainment. The annual resident/family picnic was wonderful. We especially want to thank the anonymous donor who purchased dinner for all of the staff one evening.
Shumard Rehab - The rehab patients are busy working with the therapists on their recovery. We plan to participate in the chili cook-off & serve it to the residents for dinner.

RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT - Meet Evelyn Harshman, Born September 28th, 1920. Her father was a guard for the King of Sweden before immigrating to the U.S. in early 1900’s. Her mother emigrated from Norway to Minnesota. Since there was no family around they developed wonderful friendships with the neighbors. Evelyn and her two sisters spoke Norwegian, but understood English, so at school they could talk among themselves without anyone knowing what they were saying! Evelyn was raised during the Depression and they had to live frugally. Free time was spent with neighbors, visiting and singing. Her mother played the Guitar and Evelyn learned to play the piano which her family got in payment for rent. Her mother was an excellent seamstress and taught her daughters to sew. Evelyn could also do crochet, needlepoint, crewel work and cross stitch. She and 12 friends from her 7th grade sewing class formed a club, known as “the Girls Club”. They remained friends the rest of their lives, helping each other through good and bad times. Evelyn wanted to be a nurse, but times were too hard so she found a job in the office of Munsingwear, who made supplies for the Military during WWII. She met Donald Harshman and it was her sandwiches that got his attention. They dated for two years then married on February 28, 1942, at St Olav Church, before he left for WWII. After Don’s return they lived in the family duplex where Evelyn took care of her mother until she passed away. Then they built a home in Golden Valley Minnesota and were one of the first families in the Calvary Lutheran Church. Evelyn taught & was part of the alter guild, embroidered baptismal cloths, was in bible studies & ladies circles, helped sew quilts for the missions, helped with Christmas Smorgasbord, sang in Golden Tones Senior Choir, went to detention centers for women and volunteered at Nursing Homes. She has a Jacket with many honor pins on it.

Her 63 year marriage was wonderful. Evelyn & Don traveled all over the US and Canada & in 1978 they went to Norway & Europe. All her life she lived within a 15 mile radius, until her health brought her to Milford. She has two daughters, Debi & Donna, two granddaughters Jessica & Grace & one great-granddaughter, Evelyn (Little E)! Evelyn loves music, especially Lawrence Welk. She loves to laugh, and it’s contagious. Chaplain Bill’s passage for her is Matthew 9:37-38: Then He said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. (38). Ask the Lord of the harvest therefore, to send workers into his harvest field”. Evelyn is an answered prayer. We are blessed to know her.
