Monthly Update, February 2009

EDEN ALTERNATIVE - How do our households run? Who makes decisions about resident care and life on the household? Research has shown that much better outcomes are achieved when decision-making is placed as closely as possible in the hands of the residents and front-line staff. At SEM Haven we have team based management on the households. To go along with this most of our staff are trained as "care partners" which is a blend of nurse aide, restorative, dietary and housekeeping. This "cross-training" allows all staff to help each other so that the household runs smoothly and the residents have more staff available who are trained to meet their needs.

HOUSEHOLD HAPPENINGS
Ripple Ridge. We had to reschedule our annual family dinner due to the snow storm. The new date is February 12. Our residents made soup for the soup cook-off and especially enjoy Wednesday morning crafts with Kathy Booth. Congratulations to Amy Lay who became engaged over Christmas.
Kugler Woods. Congratulations to Resident, Etta Mae Waggal who is a great grandmother again to a beautiful baby girl named, Kelly Elizabeth. Welcome new residents, Paul Naylor, Larry Mecklenborg and Irene Garrett.
Gatch Grove. In January we went to Max and Erma's for lunch. We also cooked a home made lunch of meatloaf, mashed potatoes, spinach salad, and blackberry cobbler. We have been bowling using the WII game! We will be making Chocolate Valentine Lollipop's and will sell them along with other baked goods on February 13th (baked donations are welcome). Also this month is Bob Evans for lunch on the 23rd, King Cake on the 24th, making dinner of pot roast with potatoes, onion and carrots, corn muffins, and cake on the 26th, and Happy Hour on the 27th.
Milcroft Manor. We had our first "Almost out to lunch" from White Castle's. We also had Bingo on the household with Gatch Grove - it was a lot of fun. The staff and residents made Valentine wreaths for the resident's doors and a Valentine Basket to raffle off. We are hoping to use the proceeds to decorate our kitchen.
McCormick Landing. We have been enjoying cooking and baking. The residents each came up with one of their favorite things to eat, we then put each idea in a bowl and we have been taking one out at a time. So far we have made Liver and Onions, vegetable soup, chef salad and potato soup. If any family members have recipes that the resident was known for or you know was their favorite, please bring it in. We were very lucky to have nice weather for a lunch outing to Cracker Barrel. Happy Valentines Day to all!
Shumard Rehab. We started off the year with our almost out to lunch at McDonalds, & had our first Happy Hour with wine, beer and cheese & crackers. It was fun and we plan to continue this at least once a month.

OHIO DEPARTMENT OF AGING RESIDENT SURVEY - Last fall, the ODA did satisfaction surveys of family members throughout the State of Ohio. Families ranked our care and caregivers much higher than the state average. This enabled SEM Haven to earn a "quality point" which improves our reimbursement. Go to www.ltcohio.org.

CMS 5-STAR RATING - Many of you are aware of a new program available on CMS website, www.medicare.gov (nursing home compare). Nursing homes overall quality rating is based on ratings in three areas: health inspections, quality measures and staffing. There are many variables that affect a facility's score so the state long-term care ombudsman recommends that you visit the home, observe and ask questions. SEM Haven received a very good rating of 4 out of 5 stars.

STAFF NEWS - Congratulations to our newest nurse aides, Kristin Pfau, Teresa Jones and Sarah Halcomb. They completed a two week training course and passed written and skills examinations by the Ohio Department of Health. Connie Woeber (Shumard) is a 1st time grandma! Elizabeth Katherine was born January 27 & weighed 6lb, 6oz.

Lee Bolin (floor maintenance and stna) is retiring after 10 years! We are happy for him, but sad for us. He always has a friendly greeting and good words for everyone, residents and staff alike. Judy Wallace (stna McCormick Landing) is moving out of town after 19 years at SEM. We will all miss her kind and gentle caring ways towards our residents.

RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT by Chaplain Bill - Meet Orpha Fry, born January 30, 1918, in Rowan County and raised on a farm in Carter County, Kentucky. She graduated from the 8th grade because that was as far as the county schools went. She married a carpenter, Carl Embry, and had two children, Carol and Charles. Orpha has two grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Her second marriage was to Fred Patterson, now deceased. She had a third marriage to Walter Fry, a retired mechanic, also deceased. Orpha and Walter liked to travel; they went by car all over the western United States.

Orpha loved to sew (she became a professional seamstress). She also liked gardening, canning, quilt making, and especially reading; she would get six to eight library books at a time. She was a member of the Belfast Methodist Church. She loved her fellow Christians and never missed until transportation became a problem. We are very happy to have her with us now and hope she will enjoy our services. A verse I would use for Orpha would be John 13:34-35. "A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another, as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. (35) By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, if ye have love on to another". Orpha loves everybody, and I love having her here with us. She is a wonderfully sister in Christ.
