Monthly Update, October 2009
HOUSEHOLD HAPPENINGS - McCormick Landing - We are starting holiday crafts - if anyone has ideas to share that would be wonderful. In September we enjoyed lunch at
Red Lobster and a grill out on our household. Every week we have 'happy hour' which is a huge hit!
Ripple Ridge - We had lunch at the Schoolhouse Restaurant in September and are going to the
Cracker Barrel on the 19th. We had a successful bake sale and are purchasing Halloween decorations with the proceeds. We will be having
White Castle's for almost out to lunch.
Milcroft Manor - We are kicking off the autumn season with a ride to the Pumpkin Patch. The staff and residents have been busy decorating the household with leaves and sunflowers. We will be having a Sweetest Day tea on the 17th. There is still time to buy a ticket for our Halloween Basket raffle. Our next money maker for the household will be a Walking Taco for lunch on the 9th.
Gatch Grove - September was a great month - we had chocolate milkshake and ice cream cone socials; grilling with Denise and happy hour with Jessica. We are starting crafts for the Christmas bazaar and have planned apple brown betty and Frisch's pumpkin pie socials, grilling out, going to lunch at
Cracker Barrel, pumpkin carving, chili cook-off and a Halloween Party. Our Cookbook is ready for print!
Kugler Woods - We are practicing for a Christmas musical. We are having a Bake and Junk sale - Oct. 9, 10am to 4pm. Other planned events: Family Devotions with Bill; "One Man Band" - Oct. 8, 2:00 pm; Oct. 15 - Lunch Outing (Longhorn Steak House) and Sweetest Day Bingo - Oct. 17, 2:00 pm.
September was a big celebration month with National Assisted Living week; our family picnic was a great success! We also put in an appearance at
Red Lobster for the Shrimp fest.
Shumard Rehab - We had our final cookout of the season and enjoy being outdoors as the seasons change from summer to fall. We are planning our house plant & bake sale for October 29th.

RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT - Oh, how marvelous! The resident of the month wheel clicked right on Jean Ellison. She was born and raised in Winchester, Ohio in Adams County with two brothers. Her mother died when Jean was 14 years old and her father served 45 years as the principal where she went to school. Jean worked for the HJ Heinz Company, in Cincinnati and later for American Standard in Fairfax, a maker of bathroom fixtures. Her last job was at King's Island amusement park as an administrative assistant in landscaping. She was actually in on obtaining the lumber for building rides including "The Beast". She did that job until she retired.
She married Bob Ellison, who was a mechanical engineer with the RK Leblond Machine Tool Company. Jean and Bob had two sons, Jim and Richard. Jean now has four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Bob and the boys were into sports so Jean became a fan; she especially liked football and basketball. She was a den mother for the Cub Scouts and a "room mother" at school. The boys' friends loved the Ellison's and spent a lot of time in their home. Bob and Jean enjoyed every minute of it!
Jean liked to play volleyball and she also collected antiques. Jean and Bob went on an Alaskan Cruise and to Hawaii twice. They took the boys camping all through the west and Canada. They have been to every state in the US. Her favorite music is "big band" and she even had an autograph from Glenn Miller. She was a great dancer, often taking the streetcar to the Island Queen and on to Moonlight Gardens.
Jean was very active in the Price Hill Methodist Church and later at Milford Methodist. She loves her Lord and has spent her life praising him. A good passage for Jean is Psalm 9:1-2: I will praise You, O Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonders. I will be glad and rejoice in You; I will sing praise to your name, O Most High. I praise God and thank Him for allowing us to have her with us here at SEM Haven. Chaplain Bill
REHAB REUNION - On September 24 we had a wonderful luncheon with our friends who had "graduated" from our rehab program since Shumard Rehab opened in July 2007. Laura Hamm, Director of Therapy, reported that we have helped 432 people return to home in the past 5 ½ years with an average stay of 28 days. Everything was wonderful - the food (thanks Michele & Estrella), entertainment, gifts and camaraderie. Thanks to one of our graduates, RJ Vilardo, who gave a touching and humorous account of his feelings about SEM Haven and our staff.
RENOVATION PROJECT - Great news! The Board has approved a contractor to begin work on the renovation of the Kugler Woods/Shumard Rehab lobby and chapel. This includes floors, walls, lighting, automatic door openers, and reworking the restrooms. In addition, the current activities office in the gathering room is being converted into a gift shop to be run by and to benefit our residents. There is a committee of residents touring other gift shops and making decisions on our merchandise.
2009 GIVING CAMPAIGN - You will soon be receiving a mailing for our annual fund drive. Gifts benefit our residents directly and help us further our mission of providing a loving home to our elderly residents. We appreciate your help!
